Usage
How do I export my channel or direct message?
Simply type /export
in the current channel or direct message to start the process. A link will be
replied in the same thread. Click on the link to set your options. Note that clicking this link brings you out of
Slack.
What options are customizable for export?
At this time, a user can select a date range and output format. The default date range is not set, so all
messages will be fetched and exported. In cases where there is a large message count, the export may timeout. The
default format is JSON, which is a common format for data
transfer.
Other supported formats are HTML, CSV and Text.
My export does not complete or times out. What do I do?
An unbounded or large date range is typically the cause of export failures. Restrict your export to a smaller
date range and try again. If you or your organization requires a single, large export, contact us to talk about
custom solutions to handle these requests.
What data can a user export?
Only chat history for channels, private and direct messages that the user is a member of at that time. Archived channels are not supported.
Can I export message history from a channel or direct message that I am not a part of?
No.
How long do I have to download my exported messages?
The generated archive will automatically be deleted after 24 hours.
Can I export messages from multiple channels at once?
No.
Does anybody else see that I've exported messages?
No.
What limits are there?
Generally, you should be able to export all messages that your user can access. For extremely large teams/channels, you may exceed our soft limits on storage. To control costs, a 100MB limit is placed on archive creation. If you need larger sizes, contact us.
